Ever since her brother died in a training accident, Zuleyka Carter has vowed to fulfill his dream of becoming the best transport pilot from their hometown. Before long, Zuleyka is submersed in alien Orkari territory, deeply indebted to the men who saved her life, and boundlessly curious about their way of life. As she recovers and begins tracking down the source of the attack, her bond with these men grows ever more intense. Zuleyka is dead set on going back to her old port to investigate, but not before getting to know one of her companions a little more intimately. Only then does she discover that her relationship with him is but a small piece of a larger puzzle, centered around the future of the Orkari race, and her place in their world. A love connection that seemed so unlikely at first quickly evolves into a multi-faceted dance of partners that only she can pull together.
