Jack's Need

Of all the places he could have been sent to, it had to be Austin, the armpit of Texas. With a fried food place on every corner, and all sorts of illegal activities swirling around after dark, battling his inner demons as well as those on the streets was going to be a nightmare.

He needed a win.

Unlike the other elites, Jack wasn't interested in the whirlwind that was Grace. Sure, she helped the others resolve their cases, but that wasn't the only thing she was helpful with. Grace was a pocket rocket, bright, vivacious and a kick-ass demon hunter. She'd even managed to get Gage to pull his socks up, which was a miracle in and of itself. But what on earth could she offer Jack? Aside from advice on how to get his shit together.

He needed more time.

Jack was sure that he could solve the problem in Austin, before it expanded beyond the city's boundaries. He just had to move a bit faster, be a bit stronger, think a bit quicker - basically be anything but the average blob that he already was. He could do this. He could.

Who was he kidding?

What he really needed was another double burger with a side (or two) of fries and a killer milkshake while he went over all the data just one more time. Grace said that there was a pattern in every city, and he was going to find it. Jack was going to pull himself together, after this last greasy meal, and he was going to show them all what he was made of. And it wasn't fried food.

He needed to do this - for himself, for his team. Most of all, for her.
