Hope Lost

Why me? Why now? What was I supposed to do?
I never thought the universe was empty. Having it verified didn’t surprise me. What surprised me was what I woke to in the city of Delmon. The four men I woke to were nothing I’d ever imagined but what they were and what I felt hit me like a truck.
Earth was lost, all those lives gone in an instant except the ones that the magic of Miraki had managed to save. But I wasn’t lost, and I needed to make my way in this new place, needed to find who I was and where I was needed so I could find a new normal.
But they stand beside me, guard every step I take as I search for the new normal I need. I don’t want to love them, I promised I would never put myself there after what happened to my father. They never push, never press, but as the days go by I’m starting to feel things I swore I’d never let in.
But there are forces beyond what we feel. There are things that will try to tear us asunder and in the end, the choice is mine. To save or damn, to mend or break.
