I crossed the city to the Pedestal and went in and directly up the stairs to Thomas’ office. “I’m ready,” I told him, startling him enough that he dropped his phone. “Take me to see Helena, Thomas. I’m done with this city and this plane of reality.
I’d never really felt grounded, I’d always been a little rootless and drifting and confused. Then I went to the Pedestal for my friend’s bachelorette party and something about what I found there, about who I found there made reality blow open and ground me in a way I’ve never experienced
Then Thomas made me an offer and while the things he said made no sense, they also made too much sense. Reality rippled around us, and I went willingly where it pulled. Then I met Helena, then I met the other girls that were like me, from the same place I was, and everything settled inside me.
But will the men on the other side of the cards be the same? Will they see me? Will I matter to them in a way I haven’t mattered to anyone before?
