Rose Bearen is fed up with being a living ghost.
Sure, it’s kind of fun to be able to walk through walls, float up through ceilings and down through floors. But when no one can see you, or hear you, or feel you, floating through walls loses its appeal in a hurry.
Yes, it’s good that the house of horrors called a laboratory on Rogan was successfully raided and all of the prisoners, including Rose, her sister, their daughters, and a thousand other women were freed. And yes, it’s good that they’re onboard the Pharaoh and headed for home. And yes, it’s better than good that Riley successfully soul-linked with her Rami and is now strong and healthy. And yes, it’s enormously good that the little blue thugs called Doftles are no more.
What’s not so good is the completely outrageous, over the top, you’ve-got-to-be-fricken-kidding-me fact that the fate of the galaxy rests on Rose’s and Riley’s shoulders. Luckily, all they have to do to stop the paradox is hold their daughters in their arms and make a claim.
Simple.
Sort of.
Okay, yes, there are still a few obstacles to get past.
The main one being that Rose suffered severe head and spinal injuries during her abduction. Injuries so serious that not even the Druid Tigrens can heal them. Injuries that not even the miracle of soul-linking will help this time around.
Then Percy (didn’t he die?), a kitten sized Lonyx of Rha who is far more deadly than he appears, mysteriously returns to the Pharaoh, alive and well. Equally mysterious is the fact that he can both see and hear Rose. Since she knows things the others do not, and since Percy can help her share those things, there might just be a chance to stop the paradox after all.
Then there’s her Rami. Elijah, Micah, and Kavah Gryphon. The first time she’d seen them was in the lab on Rogan, and it was a sight she’d never forget. She actually found them to be physically beautiful, a description she never imagined applying to any male. With their gleaming black hair, amethyst eyes, washboard abs, and biceps bigger around than her waist, there was simply no other word she could think of that suited. She listened to their banter as they prepared to do battle with the vicious Nomen, and even laughed a few times, secure in the knowledge that they couldn’t hear her any more than they could see her.
She was drawn to them in a way she’d never experienced before, and didn’t really understand. As much as she wanted to touch them, she was kind of glad that she couldn’t. Not having a physical body meant that her attraction to them had nothing to do with pheromones, hormones, or even physical arousal and desire. It was her soul that recognized them. Her soul that was drawn to them. Her soul that knew her life would never be what it could be without them.
Of course, even after the paradox is nulled, there are bound to be more problems headed their way. Rose decided that as long as she had her Rami, her daughter, and the rest of her enormous family around her, she was okay with that.
